Shooting and Archery On Target at Fort Polk
Until last year, Fort Polk's Recreational Shooting Range had been a consistent underachiever for over a decade. With the departure of the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized) in the mid-1990s, the post witnessed a loss of over half of its active duty population. The range went into a slide: it was not a stand-alone Rod and Gun operation, and offered no memberships, user group activities, sporting goods sales and other staples of operation. Volunteer hours had vanished. Moreover, it was plagued by hit-and-miss operating hours due to new mission operations downrange.
That was then. But last August, about 150 archers and .22 marksmen gathered at the biggest event of the year, featuring a 3D archery match and the "Top Gun" .22 rifle shoot. Prizes included firearms, gun cases, scopes, binoculars and other sporting goods courtesy of commercial sponsors, who also provided free hot dogs, sodas and chips. The event was covered live on local radio in promotional announcements.
What happened?
Turns out the range had a lot going for it, if only one looked hard--nd deeply--enough. A fact-finding MWR panel and user group got the ball rolling, and today the renamed "MWR Shooting Complex" offers the gamut of shooting sports Wednesday through Sunday, with a full calendar of special events.
"It's a classic ,if we build it, will they come?'" situation, according to CRD's Jim Federkeil. "We rebuilt it, and they came.
